Issued: 0530hrs Saturday 4th November 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Thundery rain moves into northern Italy by Sunday

Saturday
A trough of low pressure across western Europe produces areas of heavy and thundery rain across much of Iberia and France, although Portugal and southern Spanish Costas may escape largely dry. Thundery rain will break out increasingly across central & southern France, later extending into the western Alps, turning to snow on higher mountains. Blustery winds and some rain for northern France and the Low Countries.
High pressure influences eastern Europe, bringing mild and settled weather to many countries. Variable cloud and some sunshine, but some low-level fog is possible in the morning, highs 10 to 15C. Areas of showers are possible for Greece. The Baltic region will be dry and mild with southerly winds. Rain affects the far west of Norway, and later sets in for southern areas too. Sweden and Finland will be dry.

Sunday
Pulses of heavy rain spread east into central Europe overnight into Sunday. During the daytime, heavy and thundery rain will be focused around northern Italy and the Alps, with snow in the mountains. Strong winds for southern France and the western Mediterranean, risk of gales. Showery and cool for northern Spain, but much of Iberia will be dry, and warm toward the south-west, highs 22C. The Balkans and Greece will be dry and sunny. Thunderstorms for Cyprus and parts of central Turkey. High pressure over Russia maintains settled weather for eastern Europe. Fairly mild too, 12 to 14C in Poland, 15C in Romania and 17C in Hungary. Meanwhile Germany will be cooler, around 10C, with outbreaks of rain. Showery and cool for the Low Countries and France. Some rain and snow for central Scandinavia, but much of the Baltic region should stay dry.
