TORRO

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), founded in October 1974 by Dr. Terence Meaden, is a British-based independent and privately-supported research body, serving the European public interest.

TORRO collects reports of thunderstorms, tornadoes (and other whirlwinds), large and damaging hail, lightning deaths and injuries, and ball lightning from not only the United Kingdom but also across Europe. Reports are then assessed in order to determine when, where and how often these events occur, and to gain a better understanding of the situations / conditions in which they occur.

Although tornadoes are most commonly known from their frequent and devastating occurrence in the southern and mid-western US, it is the United Kingdom, which has the highest frequency of reported tornadoes per unit area in the world. This might be the reason why the original concept of the supercell thunderstorm structure was discovered here.
